Welcome

To Pack 496

To help you prepare for the 2016 – 2017 Scouting year in Pack 496, we have put together some points of interest that should help explain some of the terminology, events, and expectations that have come to be part of Cub Scouts.

Pack Meetings

The Pack Meetings are at Millcreek Presbyterian Church on Route 151 next to South Side School.  Pack meetings are where upcoming events are announced, and Rank Achievement Awards are handed out.  We also do fun activities with the Scouts.

Pack Dues

We do not ask for Pack (All Dens combined) or Den (Tiger, Wolf, Bear, WEBELOS I, WEBELOS II) dues unless funds are needed for a special project.

Meetings

We have a committee made up of adult volunteers to decide on pack events/meetings.  All parents are welcome and are encouraged to attend.  The Laurel Highlands Council holds roundtable meetings the second Thursday of every month at the Beaver United Methodist Church on College Avenue.  They start at 7:00p.

Handbooks

Each Scout needs a rank appropriate handbook in order to make rank advancements.  Your scout will need to complete specific achievements and signed off by their Den Leader.  The Den Leader will then report advancement milestones to our advancement chair person.  Awards will be handed out at the last pack meeting in May.

Cub Scout Uniforms

A uniform consists of a scout shirt with all required patches, a rank appropriate neckerchief, and rank appropriate slide.  You will want to get a belt for his belt loop awards, as well.

Pinewood Derby

The Pinewood Derby is probably our largest event of the year.  Only Pinewood Derby kits will qualify to participate in the event.  Kits will be handed out in November.  The race for our pack is in January with the Beaver Valley Mall to be in February.  We will hold a test run at our January meeting prior to our race for any last minute tweaking.  The top two from each Den during our race will advance on to the Mall race.  WEBELOS I & II are considered one Den for this event.  There are other displays set up during that time so you can go and support your Den/Pack mate and see the displays as well.

Cub Scout Day Camp

Day Camp is an event that is held when school is over in the summer.  Dates, times, locations

and prices will be announced later during the scouting year.

Fundraisers

We have multiple fundraisers throughout the year.  The most widely known and popular is the annual popcorn sale.  The Pecatonica River Popcorn allows 70% of funds to be split between the council and the pack.  We also sell hoagies from Bowsers several times out of the year.  Last but not least, we have a Giving Bean Fundraiser that sells coffees, teas, and snacks.  The goal of all our fundraisers is to become a self-sustaining pack.  What that means is to be able to provide the returning scout handbooks, returning scout registration and to continue to help with day camp fees for all scouts.  Part of what we raise also goes towards re-chartering the pack and pay for our insurance.  All of which can be costly.
